Fixing Microsoft Word 2007 crashing feature

After I installed the latest Windows Updates this morning, I got home and noticed that Microsoft Word 2007 would crash every single time I opened Word. To make matters worse, Word would also crash every time I tried to exit the program.

Lovely conundrum.

After an hour of frustration and a giggle at the appropriately titled Word 2007 crashes aren’t a bug, they’re a feature, it occurred to me that I went through this exact issue some time last year. A quick hunt through my bookmarks revealed the answer in the form of the Microsoft Knowledge Base’s article about crashes in Word 2007, Word 2003 and Word 2002.

The issue is with a corrupted key in the registry. The steps to fix this problem are:

  1. Exit all Office programs.
  2. Open the Registry Editor by selecting Start, Run, type regedit, and then select OK.
  3. Locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
  4. Back up the registry key (select the Data folder, and then select File then Export. Call it whatever you want and save it to an easily accessible spot like your desktop).
  5. Delete the Data subkey (select Data, then select Delete from the Edit menu).
  6. Exit Registry Editor.
  7. Start Word. Ta da!

Hopefully this will save you some hours of frustration!

Thanks Ruth – but I have followed your advice and also the advice of deleting add-ins, but when I go to add-ins there is only a list of inactive add-ins and deleting is not an option. My program is still freezing about every other time I make a change to a document. Do you have any other suggestions?

  8. Hi Christy, sorry I’m not sure what’s causing the issue.

  23. Hey Shah, your problem sounds a bit different. Maybe try doing a “repair” install with the original Office installation disk.

  24. I’m so grateful for this!
I have been struggling with Word crashes for about 6 months, spending hours on useless MS diagnostics. I was really considering upgrading my whole system. But, this has worked like a charm. So fast. So simple.

I run into your site looking for how to fix the issue with my Word. This has happened twice already. I’d have been writing for hours and then I guess I do some combination of key strokes and Word starts deleting/backspacing my text. I can’t do absolutely anything to stop it. The only thing I can do is turn off my laptop and then recover the autosaved file and fill in the missing text with my previously saved document. I can’t afford to lose hours of work this way. I found in anither site

a link to your solution, but when I do in my registry there’s no Data folder under 12.0. I use Office 365.
There are Data folder under 15.0 and 16.0 but I don’t know if it’s the same or what to do. Your help would be really appreciated.
